Baby Marwa had been placed in a medically-induced coma after fighting a virus when the doctors were ready to turn off the life-support machine. The doctors believed that if she did wake up, she would have severe functioning problems and doctors urged the family to make the final decision. They said she may have difficulty breathing independently, and may never be able to eat or walk either.
Marwa’s parents did not believe them and eventually took court action and formed a petition to keep her alive; they eventually managed to get a two-month extension.
During that extension, Marwa woke up and defied the doctors predictions.
Her father said “her treatment continues, but we see progress every day and that gives us a lot of hope. When I speak to her, she hears my voice, she reacts, sometimes even smiles.”
While Marwa still has a uphill battle to get back to 100 percent, the family was happy they did not do what the doctors wanted.
