As far as anyone can tell, the idea of a “useless machine” was invented by artificial intelligence pioneer, Marvin Minksy. When famed science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke laid eyes on the device, he remarked that, “There is something unspeakably sinister about a machine that does nothing—absolutely nothing—except switch itself off.” It’s worth noting that Clarke’s most famous villain, HAL 9000, was directly inspired by Marvin Minsky’s work.
There is something unusually fascinating with the “advanced useless box” featured in this video from Xpresssive on YouTube. Even though it’s really just a simple machine, it behaves in a way that feels so human. Almost as if it has a disdain for having its buttons pushed.
