While the elderly generation in our country grow larger and larger, something must be done. Retirees are forced to live together in an effort to save money. Their children are building in-law suites and guests houses, while retirement communities are being built all over the country.
One young man is going against the grain and reaching out in the kindest way.
Chris Salvatore, a 31-year-old Hollywood actor, has become very close friends with his 89-year-old neighbor, Norma Cook. When Norma became gravely ill, doctors told her that she could not live alone because she would need round-the-clock care.
Chris was already checking in on Norma every day, and she thought of him as the grandson she never had. It was only natural for him to take care of her in her time of need.
When they first met five years ago, Norma and Chris were just friendly neighbors. And then one day, Norma offered Chris a glass of Champagne and that was the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
Norma was battling leukemia when things took a turn for the worse. She developed pneumonia and spent two months in the hospital. Chris couldn’t bear the thought of her living in a retirement facility, so he asked her to move in with him.
The two have a lovely routine. He cooks for her and they love to watch the news together. In the evenings, they chat and drink Champagne. Even Hermes the cat, loves Norma living with them!
“Moving her in… it feels as though it was meant to be all along,” he said. “It’s really fulfilling to be there for her.”
