A professional baseball player has been released from his Pennsylvania team after video of him beating his then-girlfriend in a stadium stairwell emerged Wednesday.
The Venezuelan outfielder, Danry Vasquez, was arrested in 2016 on domestic violence charges after hitting the woman and dragging her down the stairs by her hair, according to a TMZ report. At the time, Vasquez was playing for the Corpus Christi Hooks, the Double-A minor league affiliate of the Astros, who cut him days after the incident.
The video, which officials had at the time of the arrest, shows Vasquez lashing out at the woman by smacking her with the back of his right hand, pulling her down the stairs and hitting her again multiple times while she puts up her arms in self-defence.
Vasquez’s case reportedly was dismissed earlier this month after he completed the ordered anger management courses.
The Lancaster Barnstormers, a professional team in the Atlantic League that had signed the 24-year-old following the incident, has now cut ties.
“There is no choice but to sever the relationship,” said the team’s manager, Ross Peeples. “Neither I nor the Barnstormers’ organization as a whole, can condone or associate with that behaviour.”
